Bodegas Riojanas and blockchain technology

Bodegas Riojanas wineries has joined Tattoo Wine, a platform that integrates e-commerce and blockchain technology to ensure wines origin and authenticity to overseas customers. In this way, Tattoo Wine becomes the first e-commerce platform specialized in wines that integrates blockchain technology.

This centenary wine company, which has as its main axis betting on innovation while maintaining respect for tradition, joins a new concept of wine marketing that has already been presented in both Shanghai and Hong Kong by Chinese company Blockchain Wine Pte. Ltd., to which the platform belongs and which is supported by The House of Roosevelt, one of the leading wine distributors in Asia.

Bodegas Riojanas Spain

Tattoo Wine platform aims to provide confidence to global wine consumers while allowing to create a transparent network with the ability of smart contracts, which allows the wine to be exchanged safely and efficiently. All this with a special focus on the markets of China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore, where the consumption of European wines is expanding, so it will allow Bodegas Riojanas wines to expand its presence worldwide.

The Tattoo Wine Platform will be built on EY’s OpsChain and will use smart contracts to introduce transparency in wine distribution. The platform will provide information regarding the quality, provenance, and authenticity of new and vintage wines. It is targeting markets in China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Singapore. The name of the platform itself is an acronym: it stands for Traceability, Authenticity, Transparency, Trade, Origin and Opinion.

Blockchain technology will allow to trace the quality, origin and authenticity of authentic Bodegas Riojanas wines. Each bottle will have a unique QR code and consumers will be able to access each bottle origin information and details (from the roots, literally). In this way the Tattoo Wine buyers will access data that can range from vineyards location, time and weather of harvest, grape varieties, detailed information about barrels used in the aging – as source of the wood – and details from aging to the tasting notes, or awards and recognitions that each wine has obtained.

Apodemia Jewels: Inspired by Nature

In 1997 the Von Knobloch family traveled to Ontario in search of red maple wood suppliers. The national tree of Canada was used by Mrs. Von Knobloch to design exclusive furniture for the Spanish high society. It was a marriage of artists, the mother was an interiors and furniture designer while the father was a famous sculptor. Their three children had inherited the artistic skills of their parents but it was undoubtedly Jimena, the little girl in the house, who seemed to have a special sensitivity to everything around her.

On the first day of vacation, family went to visit the Point Pelee National Park. The views were overwhelming, branches of maples dyed red the landscape turning it into an autumnal picture in mid June. Jimena was enthusiastic, since the little one was a lover of nature, admiring beauty in every flower and wildlife.

In a moment, Jimena stopped looking at the ground and her mother noticed that she was about to cry. Her mother approached and saw three butterflies motionless among the maple leaves and felt pity, but at the same time pride for the noble heart of his little girl. Then she told her that she should not be sad because those butterflies had fulfilled their mission: reach Canada and guide their descendants to their next destination.

Apodemia Jewels Spain

It was the butterfly Apodemia, a specie that travels from Brazil to Canada and whose members only live some few weeks. The amazing thing about these animals is that mothers transmit to their young the necessary information to complete the trip, just as their mother did.

Over the years Jimena did not forget this story, but the young woman became more and more interested in the Apodemia and often talked about it to her parents and friends. In addition to her passion for nature, Jimena developed in her adolescence a special interest in fashion and jewelry. He began to visit his father frequently in the sculpture workshop and learned the technique of melting lost wax to create small molds for jewels.

Nowadays, Apodemia is a chain of stores which sells exclusive designer jewelry created by a team of designers led by Jimena Von Knobloch. Jewelry 24/7 delicate and inspired by nature. Spanish, but of international vocation, Apodemia is created around the members of their community, although their butterflies are the main focus of attention.

Ulises Merida’s Babel

Each woman’s name is drawn with brushstrokes of knowledge. Although etymology helps solve part of the enigma, it does not reveal all its secrets. The same thing happens to the woman who saw Ulises Mérida, who is giving clues with each item she chooses but remains mysterious.

Ulises Mérida Spain
Ulises Mérida Spain

Generation by generation, and on the basis of repeating them, those names are transformed into a mantra in eternal ascension, like Tower of Babel, with each new woman, mother or sister who is called. This is the inspiration for the #Babel Primavera-Verano 2019 collection by designer Ulises Mérida. With a chromatic range typical of the lavender horizon where the sky melts, represented by intense silver and blue grays, and the earth, staged in the mustard. The chosen fabrics symbolize a wealth that goes beyond the material, just like the woman who will wear the clothes. Games of textures and volumes. Armed and fluid silhouettes embodied in designs that are carried throughout the day and until dawn. All under one and the same thread, sealed by timelessness and elegance.

Tissues are taking body falling on the bust of tests, inspired by different languages, different opinions and a parallel world, as the song performed by Faltriqueira says “My dear Babel”. It is the first mantra of S. XXI, as defined by its creator.

The patterns are transformed, they grow, they evolve from the first collection until they reach the shape of this tower of Babel that evokes the woman who wants to keep her mystery.

Blockchain in Spain and Spanish products

It was not so long ago that the internet was considered the pinnacle of technology, a network that encompassed far-reaching corners of the globe and demarcated a new world from the old. Over time, technologies that fundamentally change the way people buy, operate and engage with each other have emerged, and we continue to make great strides towards a future enabled by technology and limited only by imagination. While blockchain is most frequently associated with its controversial cousin – the bitcoin cryptocurrency – the technology’s potential to shape the path for future generations should not be pushed aside. Blockchain has slowly crept into conversations in boardrooms, at policy meetings and around water coolers.

Hyperledger Spain

However, just as the  TCP/IP protocol was met with scepticism over its ability to transform services, so too is the blockchain nowadays. At that time, the idea that TCP/IP could enable the scale up of the Internet was inconceivable. Nowadays, blockchain looks forward to provide transparency and immutability of information and is considered one of the technologies that is expected to disrupt the supply chain and logistics industry.

Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger Grid is a framework that provides a set of tools particularly suited to supply chain blockchains. At Buy from Spain we welcome contributors, both organizations and individuals, to help shape project direction, contribute ideas, provide use cases and work on specific examples. Our aim is to make resources and contacts available to the community so that the ecosystem can grow and expand its potential benefits to more Spanish manufacturers and international consumers. The world needs to stop worrying about blockchain, regulate it and let it fly.
